My Birth Day

I was born on a Saturday morning at 11:00 am. In most cases, this wouldn’t be a big deal. But for me, it meant a story that would be repeated all my life, reminding me that I was born a disappointment.

You see, I was the accident - the unexpected child born later in life. I have four older brothers who are all within six years of each other. I arrived 8 years after my fourth brother.

I was also born the son of a preacher who had a congregation of a few hundred members. And my Dad was a Seventh-day Adventist minister, so the church services were held on Saturday mornings.

So on this Saturday morning, my Dad took my Mom to the hospital. Word spread at church that Mrs. H was about to give birth. There was a lot of talk about whether this unexpected blessing” would be a boy or a girl. After having four boys, hopes were high that my parents would finally have a girl.

As fate would have it, I was born just as the main morning service was about to begin. A call came in from the hospital. The child had arrived. The Elder of the church stepped up to the podium to make the announcement.

I just received a call from Pastor H,” he begins.

The congregation sits up in anticipation.

Mrs. H has just had….” A pause.

The entire church holds its breath.

…another boy.”

In unison, the congregation lets out an, Awww!”

Awww

This is how, with my first breath of life, I disappointed hundreds.
